Key Facts
A House with Many Stories!
Imagine a house that's seen so much! The Gude House in Maryland is like a time capsule. It started as part of a big farm called Snowden's New Birmingham Manor. Then, it became a special school for girls in the 1800s. Later, it was a cozy home for people who loved growing beautiful flowers. It's a place where history and nature come together!
From Schoolhouse to Flower Power!
Long ago, in 1855, a school called Alnwick Seminary opened its doors on this land. It was a three-story brick building where girls learned all sorts of things. Sadly, a fire took it away in 1920. But don't worry! A new building, which is part of the Gude House we know today, was built in 1856. It even got bigger with a kitchen and another wing!
Mr. Gude's Flower Garden!
Guess who loved this house so much he bought it and made it special? Mr. William Gude! He owned a shop that sold greenhouses and pretty flowers. He bought the Gude House in 1926 and fixed it up. His family lived there for a long, long time, until 1980. It's like he brought his love for flowers right into the house!
What's Left Today?
Even though the land around the Gude House has changed a lot, with new office buildings popping up, the Gude House itself is still there. It's like a special landmark that reminds us of all the people and events that happened there. It's a piece of history that's been saved for us to learn about and enjoy!
