Key Facts
What's a Ground Squirrel?
Imagine a squirrel that doesn't scamper up trees all day! That's a ground squirrel! They are like the cousins of tree squirrels, but they prefer to live in cozy burrows dug into the ground.
They are part of a big squirrel family called Sciuridae. Some ground squirrels are small like chipmunks, while others are bigger, like fuzzy teddy bears called marmots. They are super good at standing up tall on their back legs, like little sentinels watching over their homes.
Where Do They Hang Out?
Ground squirrels are found all over the world, in places with open land where they can dig their homes. Think of grassy fields, deserts, and even rocky hillsides! They love areas where they can easily spot danger from afar.
They are especially common in North America and parts of Europe and Asia. These little guys build amazing underground tunnels and rooms, like tiny apartment buildings, to sleep, store food, and keep safe from predators.
What's for Dinner?
Ground squirrels are mostly vegetarians, meaning they love to munch on plants! Their favorite snacks include seeds, nuts, berries, roots, and grasses. Sometimes, they might even nibble on insects or eggs if they find them.
They are very busy gathering food, especially before winter. They stuff their cheeks with tasty treats and carry them back to their burrows to store for when food is hard to find. It's like packing a super-sized lunchbox!
Super Squirrel Skills!
One of the coolest things about ground squirrels is how social they are. Many of them live in big groups called colonies, where they have complex rules and look out for each other. They also have an amazing ability to stand up straight on their hind legs for a long time, which helps them see if any sneaky predators are nearby.
When winter comes, some ground squirrels take a long nap called hibernation, sleeping soundly in their warm burrows until spring arrives.
