Key Facts
Where the River Hugs the Land!
Imagine a place in London where a big river, the River Thames, wraps around it like a giant hug! That's the Greenwich Peninsula. It's like a big piece of land sticking out into the water. On one side, it's next to the Isle of Dogs, and on the other, it's near Silvertown. To the south, it meets the rest of Greenwich and Charlton. It's a super interesting shape, all thanks to the river's bend!
From Muddy Fields to Mega Fun!
A long, long time ago, this place was called Greenwich Marshes, which means it was a bit muddy and wild. Then, people started building things, and it became known as East Greenwich. But now, you might hear it called North Greenwich because of a big train station there.
It used to be a place for factories, but now it's changing into a place with lots of new homes, parks, and exciting places to visit, like the giant O2 arena!
The Giant Dome and Speedy Tunnels!
One of the most famous things on the Greenwich Peninsula is a huge dome called The O2. It's so big, you could fit lots of houses inside! It used to be called the Millennium Dome.
There are also super-fast tunnels under the river here. One is the Blackwall Tunnel, and a new one called the Silvertown Tunnel is being built. These tunnels help cars zoom under the water, connecting different parts of London.
Learning and Playing by the River!
The Greenwich Peninsula is becoming a place for learning too! There's a university called Ravensbourne University London right next to The O2. It's a place where students go to learn all about making cool things like movies and designs. Plus, with new parks and spaces being built, itβs becoming a fantastic place for families to live, play, and explore by the amazing River Thames.
