Why Did They Start Fighting?

After a huge world war ended, some countries were like, 'Who gets what?' Greece thought they should get some land in a place called Anatolia because their ancestors lived there a super long time ago. Some powerful friends of Greece, like the leader of Britain, said, 'Sure, you can have some!' So, Greece sent its soldiers to a city called Smyrna to start claiming the land.

The Big Push and the Big Stop!

The Greek soldiers marched into Anatolia and took over lots of cities and towns. It was like a big game of tag, but with real soldiers! They went pretty far inland. But then, the Turkish soldiers fought back really hard. They stopped the Greek army at a place called the Sakarya River. It was a huge battle that changed everything!

Uh Oh! Time to Go Home!

After the big stop, the Turkish army got super strong and pushed the Greek army all the way back. The Greek soldiers had to leave the land they had taken. They even had to leave Smyrna. It was a big change for both sides. The war ended, and Greece had to go back to where it started before the fighting began.

What Happened Next?

Because of this war, a new country called Turkey was officially made. The leaders of Greece and Turkey decided to swap lots of people who lived in their countries, so everyone lived with people who spoke the same language. It was a big deal that changed the map and how these countries got along.
