Great Wall of Sand

Key Facts
What's This Giant Sand Wall?
Have you ever built a sandcastle? Well, imagine building one as big as an island! The Great Wall of Sand isn't a real wall made of bricks, but a super-duper big project where land was made by piling up sand and rocks in the ocean.
It happened in a part of the sea called the South China Sea, in a place with lots of small islands called the Spratly Islands. It was like a giant construction project happening right in the water!
When Did This Happen?
This amazing building project didn't happen ages ago like the pyramids. It was much more recent, starting around 2013 and finishing up by 2016. That's only a few years ago!
Think about how fast you can build a sandcastle. This was like building many sandcastles, but on a much, much bigger scale, using special machines to move tons of sand and rock to create new land where there was only water before. It was a race against time to build these new lands!
Why Build Islands?
Why would someone want to build islands in the middle of the sea? Well, these new islands were built by China. Building these islands helps them have more land in a busy part of the ocean.
It's like adding extra rooms to your house, but instead of rooms, it's land in the sea! This new land can be used for different things, like building places to help ships or even for research. It's a way to make more space where there wasn't any before.
A Super Sand Project!
This whole project is called 'land reclamation.' That means taking land that wasn't there and making it appear! They used huge amounts of sand and rock, dredged from the seabed, to build up these artificial islands. It's a bit like how beavers build dams, but on a much grander scale and with lots of powerful machines.
This 'wall' of sand is a modern wonder, showing how humans can change the landscape, even in the middle of the ocean.
