Key Facts
Meet the Giant Sand Mountains!
In Colorado, there's a place with the biggest sand dunes in all of North America! These sandy hills are super tall, some reaching up to 750 feet. That's taller than a skyscraper! The sand is like a giant beach, covering about 30 square miles. It's a special park where sand has been blown by the wind for thousands of years to make these amazing shapes.
How Did the Sand Get Here?
Long, long ago, this area was filled with lakes. When the lakes dried up, the sand was left behind. The wind, especially from the southwest, started to push the sand. It blew and blew, piling it up against the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Over thousands of years, this created the giant dunes you see today. It's like nature's own giant sandcastle builder!
Fun in the Sand!
You can have so much fun at Great Sand Dunes! You can walk across a shallow creek to get to the dunes. In the summer, you can slide down the sandy hills on a sandboard or sled. It's like a giant sandy playground! But be careful, the sand can get very hot in the sun, like a warm cookie fresh from the oven.
Who Lived Here Before?
People have lived in this valley for about 11,000 years! Native American tribes like the Southern Ute were here a very long time ago. Later, explorers from Spain came to see the land. Then, people came to farm and mine. Now, it's a special park to protect these amazing sand dunes for everyone to enjoy.
