Meet the Watery Monster!

In 1927, the mighty Mississippi River decided to have a HUGE tantrum! It overflowed its banks and covered an area as big as the state of West Virginia. That's a lot of land!

The water got so deep, it was like a three-story building stacked on top of itself, reaching up to 30 feet high. For months, this giant flood made its home across the land, making it hard for people to live their normal lives.

Where Did All That Water Come From?

It all started with lots and lots of rain that fell for a long, long time. The ground couldn't soak it all up, and the Mississippi River got fuller and fuller. It was like trying to fill a bathtub with the drain still open, but way, way bigger! The river just kept growing until it couldn't stay inside its usual path anymore. It spilled out and started its watery adventure across the land.

A Flood of Sadness and Change

This giant flood made many people very sad because they lost their homes and belongings. Over 630,000 people were affected, and sadly, about 500 people lost their lives. Many families had to live in special camps for a long time.

This big event also made many African American families decide to move to new cities in the North, looking for better opportunities. It was a tough time, but it led to big changes for many people.

Building a River's New Fence

After the flood, people decided they needed to build a super strong fence for the Mississippi River. They built the longest system of walls, called levees, and special channels called floodways. These help keep the river in its place and protect towns and farms. This big project helped make sure a flood this big wouldn't happen again, keeping everyone safer.
