Key Facts
When Rivers Got HUGE!
In 1993, the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in America decided to have a super-long bath! From April to October, they just kept getting bigger and bigger. It was like they wouldn't stop growing!
These rivers are usually pretty wide, but during the flood, they became like giant, angry snakes, spreading out everywhere. They covered so much land, it was like losing a whole bunch of playgrounds and even some towns!
A Watery World
This flood was a really, really big deal. It was one of the most expensive floods ever in the United States. Sadly, 50 people lost their lives. The water spread out over an area as big as many, many school buses lined up! It was so wide, it stretched for hundreds of miles. Imagine your whole town and lots of towns around it underwater. That's how big this flood was!
Why Did It Happen?
So, how did the rivers get so big? It rained and rained and rained! For months, the sky kept pouring water onto the land. This extra water had nowhere to go, so it all flowed into the rivers. The rivers were already full, and then more and more water kept coming. It was like trying to fill a bathtub that was already full – the water just kept spilling over the sides!
A Flood to Remember
The Great Flood of 1993 was the worst flood disaster in the U.S. for a very long time. It was worse than many other floods because it lasted for so many months and covered such a huge area. It made a lot of people leave their homes because the water was too high. This flood taught everyone how powerful nature can be and how important it is to be ready for big weather events.
