Key Facts
Where Did This Happen?
The Great Depression was a tough time that happened mostly in the United States, a big country in North America. Think of it like a giant playground where suddenly many of the swings and slides broke. This made it hard for people to have fun and get the things they needed.
It started in a place called Wall Street, which is like the main office for big money-making businesses. From there, the sadness spread across the whole country, affecting almost everyone.
When Did the Sadness Start?
It all began with a big crash, not like a car crash, but a stock market crash in October 1929. Imagine if all the toys in a toy store suddenly became worthless. That's kind of what happened to money and businesses.
For about ten years, until 1940, it was really hard for many people to find jobs. This was a long time, almost as long as you've been alive and then some! It made people worry a lot about the future.
What Made Things So Hard?
One big reason was that people and businesses had borrowed too much money, like owing a lot of allowance. When they couldn't pay it back, things started to fall apart. Also, some businesses made too many promises and didn't have enough real value to back them up.
It was like building a tower of blocks that was too tall and wobbly. When one block fell, the whole tower started to tumble down, and it was hard to rebuild.
How Did People Cope?
Even though times were tough, people found ways to get by. Some families had to move to find work, like going on a long road trip. They helped each other out, sharing food and stories. A new leader named Franklin D. Roosevelt came along and started programs to help people, like building new parks and roads. It showed that even when things are difficult, people can be strong and kind.
