Looking Down at Port Fitzroy Great Barrier Island

Key Facts
Meet the Island Giant!
Great Barrier Island is a super big island, the sixth largest in all of New Zealand! It's like a giant sleeping in the ocean, about as far from a big city as you can get. It's a place with tall mountains, like Mount Hobson, which is taller than 100 giraffes stacked on top of each other!
The weather there is usually nice, with sunshine and fresh air. It's a special place that feels a bit like stepping back in time.
A Long, Long Time Ago...
People have lived on Great Barrier Island for a very, very long time. Long ago, people found special treasures like shiny rocks and tall trees called kauri. They used these things to build and make things. For a while, lots of people came to find these treasures. But now, it's a much quieter place. The island has a special name in the old language, 'Aotea', which means 'White Cloud'.
Island Life Today!
Today, not too many people live on Great Barrier Island, maybe around 900! That's like a small school. Most people live by farming, growing food, or by welcoming visitors who come to see the beautiful nature.
What's really cool is that most homes don't get electricity from big power lines like we do. They make their own power, like using the sun! It's like living in a nature park where everyone helps take care of the land.
Nature's Amazing Playground!
Most of Great Barrier Island is a nature reserve, which means it's protected so animals and plants can live safely. It's like a giant, wild playground! The island is full of beautiful forests and clean water.
People who live there are very good at taking care of the environment. They want to keep it special for everyone to enjoy, now and for many years to come. It's a place where nature is the boss!
