Key Facts
Meet the Underwater Hills!
The Grand Banks are not really land, but giant hills and flat areas way down at the bottom of the ocean, southeast of Newfoundland. Think of them like huge underwater plateaus, much bigger than any playground you've ever seen! The water here is usually cold, like a chilly swimming pool, and it's a special place where lots of sea creatures love to hang out.
It's a bit like a secret underwater city for fish and other ocean friends.
A Super Fishy Buffet!
These underwater hills are famous because they are like a giant buffet for fish! So many different kinds of fish live here, like speedy swordfish and yummy haddock. There are also little fish called capelin, and even shellfish like clams and mussels.
Lots of birds that love to eat fish also visit, and big sea mammals like whales might swim by too. It's one of the best places in the whole world for fishing!
Uh Oh, Too Many Fishers!
For a long time, people loved fishing at the Grand Banks because there were so many fish. But sometimes, people took too many fish, especially a kind called Atlantic cod. It was like eating all the cookies in the jar and not leaving any for later! In 1992, there weren't enough cod left, so the fishing had to stop for a long, long time to let them have babies and grow back.
What's Happening Now?
Even though fishing for cod stopped, the Grand Banks are still a very special place in the ocean. Scientists are still learning about all the amazing creatures that live there. It's important to take care of these underwater hills so that fish and other sea animals can have a safe home. Maybe one day, with careful watching, some fish populations can become healthy again!
