Who Was the Governor-General?

The Governor-General was a very important person who represented the King or Queen of England in India. Think of them like a super-manager for the British in India. They were in charge of making big decisions and making sure everything ran smoothly, like a principal in a giant school. This job started a long, long time ago, even before your grandparents were born!

When Was India Ruled?

The Governor-General job lasted for many, many years, from 1773 all the way until 1950! For a long time, they were also called the Viceroy. This means they were like a stand-in for the British King or Queen. After India became its own country in 1947, the Governor-General still represented the new Indian King or Queen for a little while longer.

Big Changes in India!

A super big change happened in 1858. Before this, a company called the East India Company was in charge. But after a big rebellion, the British King and Queen took over India directly! This was called the British Raj. The Governor-General then became even more powerful, like getting a promotion to a bigger office.

Who Were These Leaders?

There were many Governor-Generals over the years. The very first one in charge of a part of India was Warren Hastings. Later, Lord William Bentinck became the first Governor-General of all of British India. And when India became independent, Lord Mountbatten was the first Governor-General of the new India!
