Key Facts
Where is Gouda?
Gouda is a city in the Netherlands, a country far across the ocean! It's nestled between two other cities, Rotterdam and Utrecht. The land around Gouda is pretty flat, perfect for bikes and farms. It has a mild climate, meaning it's not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. There are also lovely canals, like little rivers, flowing through the city.
A Castle Started It All!
A long, long time ago, a family called the Van der Goude built a castle by a river. This little settlement grew and grew! By the year 1225, a canal was dug, making it easier for boats to visit. Later, a special leader gave Gouda its city rights, like a special permission to be a city. This happened way back in 1272, which is older than your grandparents' grandparents!
Yummy Cheese and Sweet Treats!
Gouda is super famous for its delicious cheese! It's called Gouda cheese, of course. People all over the world love it. Another tasty treat from Gouda is the stroopwafel, a thin waffle cookie with sweet syrup inside. Others work in shops, restaurants, or helping to keep the historic buildings looking great. The city is also a popular place for people to visit on day trips because it's so pretty and has so much history.
