Key Facts
Splashy River Homes!
Imagine a super long, skinny crocodile that loves to swim! That's the gharial! These amazing creatures live in rivers in a part of the world called the northern Indian subcontinent.
They are the best swimmers of all crocodiles, spending almost all their time in the water. They only come out to warm up in the sun or to dig nests for their babies on sandy riverbanks. It’s like they have their own watery playground!
A Snout Like a Pot!
What makes a gharial look so special? It's their super long, narrow snout! It's perfect for catching slippery fish. And guess what? The grown-up boy gharials have a funny bump on the end of their nose that looks like an earthenware pot called a 'ghara'. That's how they got their name, gharial! It’s like they’re wearing a little hat on their nose!
Baby Gharials on the Way!
When it’s time for new gharials to be born, the mommy gharials dig nests in the warm sand. They lay lots of eggs, sometimes almost 100! After the babies hatch, the mommies stay close to protect them. The baby gharials are tiny and stay in shallow water to eat small fish. As they get bigger, they move to deeper parts of the river. It’s a big adventure growing up in the river!
Why Gharials Need Our Help!
Sadly, there aren't many gharials left in the wild anymore. They used to be in many more rivers, but now they are in only a tiny part of their old home. People are working hard to help them by raising baby gharials and putting them back in safe rivers. We need to protect their homes and make sure they have plenty of fish to eat so these amazing creatures can keep swimming!
