Where Did George Come From?

Imagine a faraway land called Hanover in Germany! That's where George was born a long, long time ago. He was born in 1660, which is even before your grandparents were born! He was a prince and inherited lots of land from his family. He was also a bit of a traveler, moving between Germany and Britain when he became king.

Becoming King of Britain!

George wasn't born to be king of Britain. He became king because he was the closest relative who was Protestant. The old queen, Queen Anne, didn't have any children left, and George's mom was next in line but sadly passed away. So, George, who was already a ruler in Germany, became the King of Great Britain in 1714! He was the first king from his family, the House of Hanover, to rule Britain.

A King with Two Homes

Even though George was King of Great Britain, he still loved his home in Hanover, Germany. He often traveled back and forth. He was buried in Hanover when he died in 1727, making him the last British king to be buried outside of Britain. That's a super long journey for a king!

What Was George Like?

George was a busy king! He had to learn a new country and new people. During his time as king, the power of the king started to become less, and other people, like a Prime Minister, started to help run the country more. He also had to deal with people who wanted to put someone else on the throne, but they didn't succeed!
