Key Facts
What Happened Before the Big Fight?
Imagine two groups of people who couldn't agree. For a while, they had a 'time out' called a ceasefire. But then, one day, a raid happened to destroy a secret tunnel. This made one group angry, and they started sending rockets. The other group said they had to stop the rockets, and that's how the big fight began. It was like a disagreement that got much, much bigger.
When the Fighting Started!
On December 27, 2008, the fighting exploded! The Israeli army started by attacking places where rockets were made and stored. They also hit buildings that were important for the government.
This happened in busy cities where lots of people lived. Soon after, rockets were fired back into Israel. Then, the Israeli army sent soldiers into Gaza.
It was a very busy and dangerous time for everyone there.
How Many People Were Affected?
This war was very sad because many people were hurt. Sadly, over a thousand Palestinians and a few Israelis lost their lives. Imagine if your whole school building was broken – that's what happened to over 46,000 homes in Gaza! This meant more than 100,000 people didn't have a place to sleep. It was a very difficult time for families.
Did It Ever Stop?
Yes, the fighting finally ended in January 2009. First, the Israeli army said they would stop fighting. Then, the other side agreed to stop too. It took a few more days for all the soldiers to leave. Even after the fighting stopped, people had to figure out how to rebuild their homes and lives. It took a long time for things to get better.
