Fun Fact
Gastropods are the largest class of mollusks, with over 60,000 different kinds!

Meet the Speedy (Not Really!) Gastropods!

Imagine a snail with a swirly house on its back, or a slug that slides along without one! These are gastropods, and they are everywhere! They live in the ocean, in rivers, on land, and even in your garden. They are the biggest group of animals with shells, and they come in all sorts of amazing shapes and colors. Some are tiny, smaller than your fingernail, while others can be as big as a dog!

Where Do These Crawlers Call Home?

Gastropods are super travelers and have found homes all over our planet. You can find them in the deepest, darkest oceans, munching on seaweed. Others love to explore the sandy beaches, and some even live in fresh water, like ponds and lakes.

And don't forget the garden slugs and snails! They love damp, shady spots where they can hide from the sun and find yummy plants to eat. They are truly world explorers!

What's on the Gastropod Menu?

Gastropods have very different tastes! Many are herbivores, which means they love to eat plants. Garden snails and slugs munch on leaves, fruits, and vegetables.

But some gastropods are carnivores and eat other small animals, like worms or tiny sea creatures. Others are omnivores, eating a bit of everything! They often use a special ribbon of tiny teeth, called a radula, to scrape their food.

It's like having a built-in grater!

Shells, Slime, and Super Senses!

Many gastropods have a special shell that they carry around. This shell is like a protective house that they can hide inside when they feel scared or want to rest. Slugs don't have shells, but they make up for it with super slime!

This slime helps them slide along smoothly and keeps them from drying out. Some gastropods have eyes on stalks, like little periscopes, to help them see the world around them.
