Where is Gao?

Gao is a city in a country called Mali, way over in Africa! It sits right next to a super long river called the Niger River. Think of it like a special spot where two paths meet, one path is the river, and the other is a valley that goes into the sandy desert. It's a bit far from other big cities, like being far from your school on a sunny day.

Gao's Amazing Trading Adventures!

A long, long time ago, Gao was a HUGE deal for trading! People would bring camels loaded with goods, like sparkly jewels and warm clothes, to trade across the giant Sahara Desert. It was like a super busy marketplace where people from all over came to swap their treasures. Some kings who ruled Gao even became Muslim a very long time ago!

From Big Empire to Small Village

Gao was once the capital of a giant empire called the Songhai Empire. The ruler, Sunni Ali, was very powerful! But then, invaders came and took over. Later, Gao became a much smaller place, like a tiny village with only about 300 huts made of grass. It was much less important than it used to be.

Gao Today!

Even though Gao isn't as big as it once was, lots of people live there now, almost 87,000! That's more people than can fit in a giant stadium. Sometimes, there have been troubles in Gao, with different groups fighting. But people are still there, living by the big Niger River.
