Galley

A galley was a special kind of boat that sailed the seas a very long time ago. It was long and skinny, like a super-fast canoe, but much bigger! Instead of a big sail, its main power came from many, many people called rowers. They sat in a line and used oars to push the boat through the water. It was like a giant, floating team working together to make it go!

People have been building and using galleys for thousands of years! Ancient civilizations like the Greeks and Romans loved them. They used galleys for all sorts of things. Sometimes they were used for fighting battles at sea, like floating fortresses. Other times, they were used to carry important people and goods across the water. They were the super-ships of their day!

How did these boats move so fast? It was all about the rowers! Imagine a whole classroom of kids all rowing at the same time. Galleys had rows and rows of oars sticking out of the sides. The more rowers they had, the faster the galley could go. Sometimes, they also had a sail for when the wind was just right, but the rowers were the real engine!

Galleys were super important because they helped people travel and trade across the sea. They allowed armies to move to different places and helped empires grow. Without these speedy boats, exploring new lands and connecting with faraway people would have been much harder. They were like the highways of the ancient world, but on water!
