François Mitterrand

François Mitterrand was like the captain of France for 14 whole years! That's longer than you've been in school, maybe even longer than your parents have been married! He was born a long, long time ago, in 1916. He loved France and wanted to make it a better place. He was the first president from a group called the Socialists to lead France in a very long time.

When François was young, he had different ideas about politics. He even worked for a government that wasn't very popular. But then, he joined a secret group called the Resistance to help France during a difficult time.

After that, he changed his mind about some things and moved towards helping ordinary people. He tried to become president a few times before finally winning and leading France for many years.

François Mitterrand made some really cool changes in France. He said that everyone should have a shorter work week, so people had more time for fun! He also believed that everyone should be treated fairly and helped to get rid of the death penalty, which is a very serious punishment. He even made sure that France had amazing new buildings and art to show off its culture!

François Mitterrand was also good at making friends with other countries, especially Germany. He and the leader of Germany worked together to make Europe a stronger team. This helped create a big agreement called the Maastricht Treaty. He believed that countries could be better when they helped each other out, like sharing toys on the playground!
