What's a Four-Minute Mile?

Have you ever run as fast as you can? A four-minute mile means running a whole mile (that's like running around a big park!) in just four minutes or even less! It's like a super-duper fast race. To do this, runners have to zoom along at about the same speed as a car driving through a neighborhood. It’s a really, really hard thing to do!

Who Was the First Super Runner?

A long, long time ago, people thought running a mile in under four minutes was impossible, like trying to jump to the moon! But in 1954, a brave runner named Roger Bannister said, 'I can do it!' He ran the mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. That's just a tiny bit less than four minutes! He was the first person ever to do it, and everyone was amazed!

Why Is It So Special?

Breaking the four-minute mile was like a superhero achieving a new power! Before Roger Bannister, nobody thought it could be done. It showed everyone that with hard work and practice, even the most impossible-seeming things can happen. Now, lots of runners can do it, but it still takes a lot of training and a super-fast pace.

Zooming Faster and Faster!

After Roger Bannister showed everyone it was possible, other runners got even faster! The fastest mile ever run is now super speedy, like 3 minutes and 43 seconds! That's way faster than Roger. It’s like comparing a regular bike to a super-fast race car. Scientists are still amazed by how fast humans can run!
