Where Did the Food Come From?

Ancient Rome was like a giant marketplace! Ships brought tasty foods from faraway lands, like spices that smelled super good. Farmers grew yummy vegetables and fruits right near the city. This meant Romans had lots of different foods to eat, not just what grew in their own backyard. It was like having a super-duper grocery store that stretched all over the world!

Bread: The Super Star!

Bread was a HUGE part of every Roman meal, like how pizza is for us! Richer Romans ate fluffy bread made from wheat, which was super tasty. Poorer Romans ate bread made from barley, which was a bit tougher but still good. Imagine bread so important it was like the main event at every single meal, every single day!

Feasts Fit for Emperors!

Romans LOVED parties where they ate lots of food! These parties were super important, even for their gods. They ate delicious things like sausages, cured ham, and even blood pudding (which sounds a little strange!). They also loved olives and nuts, and for dessert, they had sweet pastries made with honey. Yum!

Salty Secrets and Sweet Treats

Romans used salt to make their food taste amazing, but it was pretty expensive! Their favorite salty sauce was made from fish, called garum. They also used herbs from their gardens and spices from far away, like pepper. For sweet treats, they used honey and fruit like figs and dates. And they drank wine mixed with water, because drinking it straight was a no-no!
