Meet the Floppy Friend!

A floppy disk is like a special, flat square that used to hold computer information. It's made of a bendy, magnetic disc inside a plastic case. Think of it like a tiny, square lunchbox for computer files! You would put it into a special slot on the computer, called a floppy disk drive, to load games or save your drawings.

Where Did These Disks Come From?

The very first floppy disks were invented by a company called IBM way back in 1971. They were super big, about as wide as a dinner plate! Later, they got smaller, like the size of a small coaster (5.25 inches), and then even smaller, about the size of your palm (3.5 inches). These smaller ones were much easier to carry around!

Why Were They So Cool?

Floppy disks were amazing because they let people move computer information from one computer to another. Before them, sharing computer stuff was really hard! They were like the first way to share digital photos or homework with friends. Even though computers don't use them much now, you might still see a 'save' button that looks like a floppy disk!

How Did They Work Their Magic?

Inside the plastic case, there's a thin, round disc that spins super fast when you put it in the computer. This disc is covered in a special magnetic material. The computer's drive has a little arm that reads or writes information onto this magnetic surface, like a tiny pen writing on a spinning record. It's how the computer remembered your games and stories!
