Memorial Day 2012

Key Facts
When Did Our Flag Get Its Birthday?
Imagine a special day just for your favorite toy! Well, the American flag has a birthday too, and it's on June 14th. This is when people in charge, called the Second Continental Congress, decided what our flag would look like way back in 1777.
They said it should have 13 stripes, alternating red and white, and 13 white stars on a blue background. It was like creating a brand new constellation just for the United States!
Stars, Stripes, and Super Stories!
The first idea for Flag Day was to help people cheer for their country during a big fight called the Civil War. Later, a President named Woodrow Wilson said that June 14th should be a special day to celebrate the flag. Then, a long time after that, Congress officially made it National Flag Day!
Some towns even started celebrating it before it was official, like Rennerdale in Pennsylvania, which was the very first town to have a Flag Day celebration as a state holiday.
Is It a School Holiday?
Flag Day is a really important day, but it's not a holiday where everyone gets off school like Christmas or the Fourth of July. It's up to the President to decide if it's a day to officially celebrate. But that doesn't stop people from showing their patriotism!
Many places have parades, picnics, and special events to honor the flag. It's a day to remember the symbol of our country and all it stands for.
The Army's Big Birthday Too!
Guess what? The U.S. Army also has its birthday on June 14th! It was started even before the flag was officially adopted, way back in 1775. So, on June 14th, we celebrate both the birthday of our amazing flag and the birthday of the brave soldiers who protect our country. It's a double dose of celebration for a very special day in American history!
