Key Facts
Meet the Five Families!
In the big city of New York, there were once five special groups, like secret clubs, called the Five Families. They were all Italian American and had their own leaders. Think of them like teams in a game, but with very serious rules. These families were organized a long, long time ago, back in 1931, by a man named Salvatore Maranzano. He wanted to make sure everyone knew who was in charge!
Where Did They Come From?
These families weren't always called the Five Families. They started as different Italian American gangs. After a big disagreement, Salvatore Maranzano put them all together into five main groups.
These groups were named after their leaders at the time. Later, their names changed a bit, like how you might get a new nickname! The families we know today are the Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese families.
Who Was the Boss of All Bosses?
Salvatore Maranzano wanted to be the 'boss of all bosses,' like the king of the whole group! But that didn't last very long. Soon after, he was no longer in charge.
Then, another leader named Lucky Luciano created a special committee, like a student council for the Mafia, to help make decisions and solve problems between the families. This committee made sure things were fair, or at least that's what they hoped!
A Big Secret Revealed!
For a long time, most people didn't even know about these Five Families. It was a big secret! But in 1963, a man named Joseph Valachi decided to tell everyone. He spoke at special meetings called hearings and revealed all about the Five Families. It was like a huge surprise for the whole country! Sometimes, other groups have become strong enough to be called a 'Sixth Family' too.
