The Big Day Arrives!

On a sunny Thursday, April 30, 1789, something HUGE happened in New York City. George Washington, a very famous leader, was about to become the very first president of the United States! It took almost two months after people decided he would be president for this special day to finally arrive. He stood on a balcony at a building called Federal Hall, ready to take his oath.

Taking the Oath of Office!

What is an oath? It's like a super serious promise! George Washington promised to do his very best to be a good president for everyone in the new country. A man named Robert Livingston, who was in charge of New York, helped him take this important promise. This was the moment the new government, with a president and everything, officially started working!

A Brand New Government!

Before this day, the United States was still figuring out how to be a country. George Washington's inauguration was like the official start button for the government! It meant that the rules written in a special book called the Constitution were now being put into action. This was a big deal because it showed everyone that the country had a leader and a plan.

The Vice President's Turn!

George Washington wasn't the only one starting a new job. John Adams became the first Vice President! He started his job a little earlier, on April 21, 1789. His job was to be in charge of the Senate, which is like a big meeting room for important people who help make laws. It's kind of funny that his start date was different from President Washington's!
