Why Were They Fighting Near Paris?

In 1914, a big war started! The German army had a super-fast plan to win. They wanted to march right into Paris, the capital of France, and beat the French and British armies.

They marched so fast, they got super close to Paris, only about as far as a short car ride away! But the French and British soldiers didn't give up. They decided to make a stand near a river called the Marne.

It was like saying, 'You can't go any further!'

The Big Race to Stop the Germans!

The German soldiers had been marching for a long, long time, almost like running a marathon every day! They were tired and running out of supplies, like running out of snacks on a long trip. The French and British armies, though tired too, got some extra help.

They gathered more soldiers and even used taxis to rush troops to the front lines! It was a bit like a surprise reinforcement in a video game, helping them outnumber the tired Germans.

A 'Miracle' on the River!

The battle lasted for about a week, and it was super intense! The French and British armies fought really hard to push the Germans back. They were so successful that the Germans had to stop their fast march and retreat.

The French called this victory a 'miracle' because it saved Paris and stopped the Germans from winning the war so quickly. It was a huge turning point, like winning a really important round in a game.

What Happened Next?

After the Germans retreated from the Marne, the war didn't end. Instead, both sides started digging long lines of trenches in the ground. These trenches were like underground forts that soldiers lived in.

The war then became a long, tough fight that lasted for many more years, with soldiers trying to outmaneuver each other. The First Battle of the Marne showed that the war would be much longer and harder than anyone expected.
