Why Were They Fighting Near Gaza?

Long ago, during a huge world war, soldiers from the British Empire were trying to move across a sandy place called the Sinai Peninsula. They wanted to get closer to the city of Gaza. They had already won some battles and were getting closer and closer. Gaza was an important city, and controlling it would help them win the war. So, they decided to attack it!

The Big Day of the Battle!

On March 26, 1917, the soldiers, called the Eastern Force, attacked Gaza. They were like a team trying to get into a castle. Some soldiers on horses, called mounted infantry, helped by stopping other soldiers from coming to help Gaza. The soldiers on foot fought hard and got very, very close to winning. They were almost inside the city!

Uh Oh, Time to Go!

But then, something tricky happened. It was getting dark, and the soldiers worried they couldn't see well enough to fight safely. Also, more enemy soldiers were coming to help Gaza.

The boss of the British soldiers decided it was too risky to keep fighting. So, even though they were so close to winning, they had to turn around and leave. It was like stopping a game right before you score the winning point!

What Happened After the Fight?

This battle was a bit of a surprise loss for the British soldiers. They didn't win Gaza that day. Sadly, a few weeks later, they tried to fight another big battle near Gaza and lost again, even more this time! These battles showed that taking Gaza was going to be very, very hard. It was a tough lesson for the soldiers.
