Fun Fact
El Alamein was only about 66 miles (106 km) from Alexandria, a major Egyptian city, meaning the enemy was very close to reaching it!

Why Were They Fighting in the Desert?

Long ago, during a big war called World War II, two big teams of countries were fighting. One team was called the Axis, and the other was called the Allies. The Axis team wanted to march across the desert in Egypt to reach important places like cities and a very important water path called the Suez Canal.

The Allies, who were defending Egypt, had to stop them! This battle happened in a place called El Alamein, which was super close to a big city called Alexandria. It was like the enemy was almost at the playground gate!

Who Were the Main Fighters?

On one side were the Axis soldiers, led by a famous general named Erwin Rommel. His team had German and Italian soldiers. On the other side were the Allied soldiers, mostly from the British Empire and other countries that were part of it.

Their leader was General Claude Auchinleck. These soldiers were brave and strong, fighting under the hot desert sun. They used tanks and other machines to try and win the day.

What Happened in the Big Fight?

The Axis army was trying to push further into Egypt. They were getting very close to important cities, which made the Allies worried! But the Allies fought back really hard.

They managed to stop the Axis army from moving any closer. It was like a giant game of chess, but with real soldiers and tanks! Even though the Axis army was strong, they couldn't get past El Alamein.

The Allies held their ground and stopped the enemy's advance.

Why Was This Fight So Important?

This battle was a super big deal! If the Axis army had won, they could have taken over important parts of Egypt, like the Suez Canal. This canal is like a superhighway for ships!

Stopping the Axis army at El Alamein meant they protected these important places. It was a turning point, like when your favorite team finally scores a goal after being behind. It showed that the Allies could win and stop the enemy's plans.
