FEMA wasn't always around! It was created a long, long time ago, in 1979, by President Jimmy Carter. Before FEMA, there were different groups that helped with disasters, but they weren't all together.

President Carter thought it would be much better to have one big team that knew exactly what to do. So, he brought everyone together to create FEMA, making it easier and faster to help people when they needed it most.

FEMA is super important because they help when things get really, really tough. If a hurricane blows down houses or a flood covers a whole town, the people who live there need a lot of help. FEMA can bring in extra people, supplies, and money to help rebuild homes and roads.

They also help teach people how to be ready for emergencies, like having a plan for what to do if there's a fire. They are like the grown-ups who make sure everyone is safe and cared for after a big problem.

FEMA doesn't just show up anywhere! First, the governor of the state where the disaster happened has to ask for help. It's like saying, 'We need our special helpers!' Then, the President says 'Okay!' and FEMA can start working.

They send teams to see what happened and figure out the best way to help. Sometimes they give money to help fix buildings, and other times they help people find a safe place to stay. They work with lots of other helpers to make sure everyone is okay.
