Key Facts
Where is Farm Cove? A Splashy Spot!
Imagine a beautiful, sparkly bay right in the middle of a famous harbor called Sydney Harbour. That's Farm Cove! It's like a little secret hiding place, tucked away from the big busy parts.
It's separated from another famous spot, Sydney Cove, by a pointy bit of land where the amazing Sydney Opera House stands. Farm Cove is a shallow bay, meaning it's not super deep, and it's connected to the ocean by a tidal inlet. This means the water level goes up and down with the ocean’s tides, like a gentle breath!
Farm Cove's Awesome Names!
Farm Cove has a super special secret: it has two names! The first name, Farm Cove, came from a long, long time ago when people tried to grow food there for the very first settlers in Australia. The other name is Wahganmuggalee.
Indigenous people, who lived there for thousands of years before anyone else, called it Woccanmagully. They used this special place for important ceremonies, like a fun 'Kangaroo and Dog Dance' and other special traditions. Having two names shows how important and loved this place is by everyone!
Who Visited Farm Cove? Royal Guests!
Farm Cove has hosted some VERY important visitors! Back in 1954, a very special lady named Queen Elizabeth II came to Australia for the first time. Guess where she landed?
Right at Farm Cove! It was the very first time a queen had ever stepped onto Australian land. Imagine the excitement!
For many years, big navy ships also used Farm Cove as a place to park. It was a busy hub for ships from the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy until the 1960s.
Gardens and Farms: A Busy Place!
Before it was famous for royal visits, Farm Cove was a place for farming! The very first farm for the new colony was set up right here. But farming didn't work out so well, so they moved it.
Later, a very important person named Governor Lachlan Macquarie decided to create something beautiful: the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney. He started building this amazing garden all around Farm Cove in 1816. Today, it’s a stunning place to visit, filled with incredible plants and flowers, right next to the sparkling water of Farm Cove.
