Falles: Giant Art That Goes BOOM!

In the city of Valencia, Spain, there's a super cool festival called Falles. During this festival, giant, colorful statues called 'ninots' are built. These ninots are like huge works of art, sometimes as tall as a house! They are made from wood and cardboard and are decorated with funny pictures and stories. It’s like a giant art show that you can only see for a few days each year.

A long, long time ago, carpenters in Valencia had a tradition. On Saint Joseph's Day, which is in March, they would burn old wooden scraps from their workshops. Over time, they started making these scraps into funny figures. These figures got bigger and more artistic, and eventually, they became the amazing Falles we see today. It all started with a simple way to clean up workshops!

The most exciting part of Falles is that at the end of the festival, most of the ninots are set on fire! This is called 'La Cremà'. It might sound a bit sad, but it's a celebration of new beginnings. It's like saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming the new one with a big, fiery show. One ninot, chosen by the people, gets saved from the fire to go in a museum!

Falles is a huge party! Besides the giant statues, there are parades with people in beautiful costumes, lots of fireworks that light up the sky, and delicious food to eat. The whole city comes alive with music and excitement. It’s a time for families and friends to come together and celebrate. The saved ninot is called the 'Ninot d'Honor'.
