Meet the Rulebook!

The European Convention on Human Rights is like a super important set of rules for many countries in Europe. It was created a long, long time ago, in 1950, to make sure that all people living in these countries are treated with kindness and respect. Think of it as a promise that everyone gets to have basic freedoms, like being able to say what you think or not being treated unfairly just because of who you are.

It's a way to keep everyone safe and happy!

Where Did This Big Idea Come From?

After a very difficult time in history, leaders in Europe wanted to make sure that bad things like unfairness and cruelty would never happen again. So, they got together and wrote down these special rules. It was inspired by an even bigger promise called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The European Convention is special because it has a real court where people can go if they think their rights have been broken. This court is in a city called Strasbourg.

Why It's Like a Superhero for Fairness!

This Convention is like a superhero because it has a special power: it can make sure countries actually follow the rules! If someone believes their rights are not being respected by their country, they can tell the European Court of Human Rights. If the court agrees, the country has to fix the problem.

It's like having a referee who makes sure everyone plays fair. This makes sure the rules aren't just words on paper, but real protections for people.

More Awesome Rights!

Over the years, more rights have been added to the rulebook, like a magic spell making it even stronger! These include the right to own your own things, the right to go to school, and even the right to vote in elections. It also says that people shouldn't be put in jail just for owing money.

And, very importantly, it has helped to get rid of the death penalty in many countries. It's always growing to protect more people in more ways!
