Meet the Mighty Bison!

Imagine a furry giant, bigger than a horse and as heavy as a small car! That's the European bison, also called a wisent. These gentle giants have shaggy brown fur, a big hump on their shoulders, and strong horns. They love to munch on grass and leaves all day long. They are the largest land animals in Europe and are super important for keeping forests healthy by clearing out old plants.

Where Did They Roam?

Long, long ago, European bison were like the kings of the forests and meadows across Europe. You could find them from the west all the way to the east! But sadly, people hunted them too much, and they almost disappeared. Luckily, brave people saved them and now they live in special forests and nature reserves in countries like Poland, Belarus, and Russia. It’s like they’re making a comeback!

Bison Babies and Big Families

When baby bison are born, they are called calves. They are wobbly at first but can stand up pretty quickly. Mama bison are very protective of their little ones. Bison live in groups, kind of like a big family. These groups help them stay safe from any dangers. They work together to find the best grass and look out for each other. It’s always better to be in a group!

Why Bison Are Super Important!

European bison are like nature's gardeners. By eating lots of grass and plants, they help new plants grow and keep the forests tidy. This makes a better home for many other animals, like birds and insects. They are also a symbol of wild nature and a success story because they were brought back from the brink of disappearing forever. Seeing them reminds us how amazing our planet is!
