What's a Carp and Where Does it Live?

Imagine a fish that can grow as long as a grown-up is tall! That's the Eurasian carp! These big fish, with scientific name Cyprinus carpio, are like the adventurers of the water.

They originally came from Europe and Asia, in places like China and the Danube River. Now, you can find them in lots of lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers all over the world where the water isn't too cold. They love to hang out near the bottom, where it's cozy and there's lots to nibble on.

Carp's Favorite Snacks!

Eurasian carp are super hungry and eat all sorts of things! They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. They use their special mouths, which are a bit like vacuum cleaners, to slurp up tasty bits from the bottom of the water.

They love to eat tiny bugs, worms, and little crustaceans. They also munch on yummy algae and plants that grow in the water. It's like they have a buffet right at their doorstep!

They can even dig into the mud to find snacks.

How Big Can They Get?

These fish can get really, really big! A grown-up Eurasian carp can be as long as 100 centimeters, which is about the height of a young child standing up. They can also weigh as much as a big dog, sometimes up to 14 kilograms (30 pounds).

Some super-duper old carp have even been known to get much, much larger! They have tough, shiny scales that protect them, and they can live for a long time, sometimes over 20 years, which is longer than many pet cats or dogs live!

Carp's Life Story

Eurasian carp are pretty common, so they are not in danger of disappearing. Their conservation status is 'Least Concern'. This means there are plenty of them swimming around!

They are important because they help keep the water clean by eating algae and plants. They are also a food source for other animals. Sometimes, they can even be kept as pets in large ponds or aquariums, and people have been raising them for food and fun for thousands of years!
