Key Facts
What Was This Big Fight About?
Ethiopia, a country in Africa, had a really long and difficult time called a civil war. This means people inside the same country were fighting each other. It wasn't like a game of tag; it was a serious disagreement about who should be in charge and how the country should be run. This fight lasted for many years, making life very hard for lots of people.
Who Was Fighting and Why?
For a long time, a leader named Mengistu Haile Mariam was in charge. But many groups of people didn't like how he was ruling. They wanted to have a say in their government.
So, different groups, like the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), started fighting against Mengistu's army. They wanted to change the country's leaders and rules. It was like different teams wanting to play by their own rules.
When Did This Happen?
This big fight really kicked off in the 1970s and went on for a super long time, until 1991! That's longer than many kids have been alive, and even longer than some of your parents have been alive! Imagine a playground game lasting for over 15 years! During this time, many people had to leave their homes, and it was a very sad and difficult period for Ethiopia.
How Did It End?
Finally, in 1991, the group called the EPRDF won the fight. They took control of the country and Mengistu Haile Mariam had to leave. This meant the long civil war was over. Ethiopia could then start to rebuild and try to make things better for everyone. It was a big moment, like finally getting to rest after a very long and tiring race.
