Key Facts
What's a Fence For, Anyway?
Have you ever seen a fence around a yard or a playground? It keeps things in or out, right? Well, 'enclosure' is a big word for making fences and walls around land.
Long, long ago, in places like England, most land was shared. Farmers could all use parts of it to grow food or let their sheep munch grass. But then, people started putting up fences to claim land for themselves.
It was like saying, 'This field is mine now!' This changed how people lived and worked with the land.
From Sharing to Owning: A Big Change!
Think about sharing toys with friends. It's fun! For a long time, people shared farmland.
But then, some richer people decided they wanted bigger, private fields. They used fences and hedges to mark their own land. This was called 'enclosure'.
It meant that the shared fields, where everyone could farm a little, started to disappear. Instead, there were lots of private farms. This was a huge change that happened over many, many years, like watching a tree grow very slowly.
Why Did Fences Matter So Much?
Putting up fences changed life for lots of people. If you didn't own land, you couldn't farm on the shared fields anymore. This meant some people had to leave their villages to find work, maybe in big towns.
The people who owned the fenced land could farm more efficiently, like planting rows of crops perfectly straight. They could also raise more sheep for wool. It made some people richer, but it made life harder for many others who used to rely on the shared land.
Fences Today and Long Ago
Enclosure is like a historical event that happened a long time ago, mostly in farming areas. It's not something you see happening with new fences being built everywhere today in the same way. But the idea of owning and dividing land is still super important.
We have fences around our yards, farms, and even countries! The way we use land today, with private farms and fields, is a result of these big changes that started with putting up fences centuries ago.
