Where Did This Big Idea Come From?
This idea was thought up by a philosopher named Caspar Hare. He wondered about how we experience the world. Imagine you're in a train crash, and you don't know if you're Person A, who is going to have painful surgery, or Person B, who is okay.
Egocentric presentism says that if you were Person A, the thought of that surgery would feel super real and scary to YOU, because it's YOUR experience happening now. It's like a special way of thinking about who you are and when you are.
Why Does This Idea Matter?
This idea helps us think about what it means to be 'us' and how we connect with others. If we only focus on our own 'now,' it might make us think differently about other people's feelings. It’s like asking if your playtime is more important than your friend's playtime just because it's happening to you. It makes us wonder if our own perspective is the most important one, even if others are real.

You don't know if you are A or B. Egocentric presentism says you'd really, really hope you're Person B! This is because your own 'now' experience feels the most important.
