Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Edo Castle!
Edo Castle was a super strong fortress built a long, long time ago, way back in 1457! It was made of strong walls and deep moats, like a giant playground moat but much bigger. This amazing castle was built by a clever person named Ōta Dōkan.
Today, the land where Edo Castle stood is part of the Tokyo Imperial Palace, where Japan's Emperor lives. It's like finding a secret treasure hidden inside a modern park!
Home of the Shogun!
For many years, Edo Castle was the most important place in Japan. A powerful leader called a 'shogun' lived there. The shogun was like the boss of the country's army. The castle was the headquarters for the military government, which means it was where all the important decisions were made. Think of it like the principal's office and the army's command center all rolled into one giant building!
What's Left of the Castle Today?
Even though the castle isn't all there anymore, some parts still stand strong! You can still see the moats, which are like watery ditches around the castle, and the tall walls and mounds of earth called ramparts. These are like the castle's ancient bones.
The castle grounds were HUGE, much bigger than they are now. Parts of it are now where Tokyo Station and a big park called Kitanomaru Park are located. It's like finding old LEGO bricks scattered around a new playground!
A Castle's Amazing Size!
Edo Castle was enormous! During the Edo period, it was so big that it stretched all the way to where Tokyo Station is today. Imagine a castle so large that a busy train station and a whole section of a city were inside its walls! The castle grounds were even bigger than many football fields put together. It was a truly massive place, designed to be safe and impressive.
