Australia's First Leader!

Imagine Australia as a brand new playground! Edmund Barton was like the first captain of that playground. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1849. He was a super smart lawyer who loved making rules. When Australia became one big country in 1901, Edmund Barton was chosen to be its very first Prime Minister. That means he was in charge of making sure everything ran smoothly for everyone.

Building a New Country

Before Edmund Barton, the different parts of Australia were like separate houses. Edmund Barton had a big idea: to make them all one giant, super-strong house called Australia! He worked really hard with other leaders to get everyone to agree. He helped write the special rulebook for the whole country, called the Constitution. It's like the ultimate instruction manual for Australia!

Making Big Decisions

As Prime Minister, Edmund Barton made some really important choices. He helped create Australia's army and navy to keep it safe. He also made sure that women could vote, which was a huge step! He even helped start the High Court, which is like the ultimate referee for all the country's laws. He was a busy man, helping shape Australia from the very beginning.

From Leader to Judge

After being Prime Minister for a few years, Edmund Barton decided to do something else amazing. He became one of the first judges on the High Court he helped create! This meant he got to make sure the country's rulebook, the Constitution, was used fairly. He was so important that people still call him one of Australia's 'founding fathers'.
