Meet Mrs. Roosevelt!

Imagine a very important lady who lived in the White House a long, long time ago. That was Edith Roosevelt! She was married to President Theodore Roosevelt, who was like the captain of the country.

Edith wasn't just the President's wife; she was a super helper behind the scenes. She made sure everything in the White House ran smoothly, like a well-organized classroom. She even helped decide who got to visit and when, making her a very important person in Washington D.C.

A Life Full of Changes

Edith grew up near the Roosevelt family and married Theodore when they were grown-ups. They had a big house called Sagamore Hill where their five children lived. Her life changed a lot when Theodore became president.

Suddenly, she was the First Lady, which is a very big job! She moved from their home to the White House, a famous building in Washington. She had to get used to being in the spotlight, even though she preferred a quieter life.

Keeping Things Tidy and Safe

Edith was very good at making sure things were just right. When the White House needed fixing up, she was in charge of the renovations. She wanted it to be beautiful and functional.

She also hired the very first person to help a First Lady with all her important tasks. This person was called a social secretary. Edith also didn't like when reporters took pictures of her family without asking, so she arranged for official photos to be taken instead.

She was like a protective mom for her family and the White House!

A Loving Mom and Traveler

Even though she had a big job, Edith loved her children more than anything. She had five kids with Theodore. Later in life, after her husband passed away, she traveled to faraway places like Europe and South America.

She also wrote a book about her family's history. Sadly, she lost some of her children as she got older, which made her very sad. But she always remembered her family and her important role as First Lady.
