What's That Wobbly Shape?

Have you ever seen a cookie get a bite taken out of it? That's kind of like what happens to Earth's face when you look at it from the Moon! Sometimes it looks like a full circle, like a yummy cookie.

Other times, it looks like a sliver, like a banana. This changing shape is called an Earth phase. It's all about how much of Earth is lit up by the Sun, just like how your face is lit up when you stand in front of a lamp.

A Cosmic Dance in the Sky!

Earth's face changes shape because the Moon is always going around the Earth, and the Earth is always going around the Sun. Imagine you're spinning around a friend who is also spinning around a big light. As you all move, the light hits your friend's face differently, right?

That's what happens with Earth! It takes about a month for Earth's face to go through all its different shapes, just like our Moon does.

Earth's Face: A Giant Ball of Light!

From the Moon, Earth looks like a giant, colorful ball. It's much bigger than the Moon! When the Sun shines on Earth, it lights up one side. As the Moon moves around Earth, we see different parts of that lit-up side. Sometimes we see the whole bright side (that's a 'full Earth' phase!), and sometimes we only see a little bit of it, like a tiny smile.

Seeing Earth's Changing Face

Astronauts who have been to the Moon have seen Earth's phases with their own eyes! They saw it change from a bright circle to a crescent, just like the Moon we see from Earth. It's a beautiful sight that reminds us how our planet looks from far, far away. It's like Earth is putting on a show just for the Moon!
