Key Facts
Giants Born in Cities!
Long ago, cities had buildings that were mostly short. But then, people got super smart and invented new things! They figured out how to build buildings that went way, way up, like giant towers.
These super tall buildings were first built in big cities in America, like New York and Chicago, starting around 1884. They were so tall, people started calling them 'skyscrapers' because they looked like they were scraping the sky!
What Made Them So Tall?
Building super tall is tricky! These early skyscrapers had strong metal skeletons inside, like a strong frame for a giant robot. They also got special deep foundations so they wouldn't wobble.
The coolest part? They got elevators! Before elevators, you had to climb stairs to the top of a tall building, which was a lot of work.
Electric lights also made them bright and safe inside, even at night. These inventions made it possible to build up, up, up!
Chicago vs. New York: A Tall Tale!
Chicago was the first city to build lots of these super tall buildings. They looked like big, square boxes with shops and offices inside. But then, Chicago said, 'No more buildings taller than 150 feet!' That's like a 15-story building. So, New York took over the race to build even taller. They built famous ones like the Singer Tower, which was taller than 60 school buses stacked up!
Sky-High Wonders and Shadows
These amazing buildings were super popular for businesses. But sometimes, they were so tall they made the streets below them dark all day! People also worried they looked messy in the sky.
Later, buildings got even taller, like the Empire State Building, which was as tall as 125 giraffes standing on each other's shoulders! But after a while, building stopped for a bit, and people started designing skyscrapers differently.
