Where the River Begins its Journey!

Imagine a super long ribbon of water, about as long as 97 football fields! That's the Eagle River. It starts way up high in the mountains, near a special line called the Continental Divide.

This is where water decides if it will flow to the Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic Ocean. The Eagle River chooses the Pacific! It tumbles and babbles its way through pretty towns like Minturn and Avon, making its way to join an even bigger river, the Colorado River.

A River's Mood Swings!

This river is like a playful friend with different moods! In the hot, dry summer, it can be a little shy, with less water flowing. But when the snow melts in the spring, WOW!

The river gets super powerful and can be as wide as a few school buses parked side-by-side. It carries lots of water, rushing and roaring down the mountains. This big rush of water is called 'runoff' and it's a very important time for the river.

Nature's Playground!

The Eagle River is surrounded by beautiful mountains and forests. It's a special place for all sorts of plants and animals. The water itself is home to fish that love to swim in its currents. The riverbanks are covered in green plants that feed little critters. It's like a giant, wild playground where nature gets to have all the fun. People love to visit this area for hiking and exploring!

A River's Story

Long ago, people discovered that the rocks near the Eagle River had valuable minerals. They built mines to dig them out. Sometimes, these old mines can leave a little bit of a mark on the river, like making the water a bit different. Scientists and helpers work hard to make sure the river stays as healthy and happy as possible for everyone and everything that calls it home.
