Dusky Dolphin

Key Facts
Splashy Swimmers with a Colorful Coat!
Imagine a dolphin that’s black, grey, and white all over, like a cool, swirly pattern! That’s the dusky dolphin! They are not super big, about as long as a small car.
These playful pals love to leap and flip out of the water, sometimes making a big splash and sometimes being super quiet about it. They have a short, stubby nose and a fin that curves like a smile on their back. They are super related to another dolphin called the Pacific white-sided dolphin, like cousins in the ocean family!
Where Do These Ocean Buddies Live?
Dusky dolphins are like world travelers, but they like to stay near the land! You can find them in the cooler waters all around the Southern Hemisphere. Think of places like the coasts of South America, Africa, and New Zealand.
They don't live everywhere, though; their homes are in special spots. They like to swim close to the shore, where the water isn't too deep. It’s like they have their favorite neighborhoods in the big blue ocean!
What's for Dinner? Fish and Squid Snacks!
These dolphins are super smart hunters! They love to eat yummy fish and squid. Sometimes, they work together like a team to round up schools of fish, making them swim into a tight ball so they can all eat.
Other times, they go hunting when it’s dark, diving deep into the ocean to find their snacks. They have different ways to catch their food, which is pretty amazing. They are carnivores, which means they only eat meat, like fish and squid!
Dolphin Playtime and Family Time!
Dusky dolphins are very social creatures. They like to hang out in groups, but the size of their group can change. Sometimes they are in big parties, and sometimes they are in smaller families.
The grown-up girl dolphins take care of the babies in special nursery groups. The boys and girls have a funny way of finding a mate, where lots of boy dolphins might chase after one girl dolphin! The fastest and strongest boy dolphin gets to be the dad.
