Key Facts
Get Ready to Paddle!
The Dusi Canoe Marathon is a super exciting race where people paddle canoes for three days! It starts in a city called Pietermaritzburg and ends in another city called Durban, both in South Africa. It's like a giant adventure on the water, covering a distance of 120 kilometers, which is longer than 100 football fields put together!
Lots of people, between 1600 and 2000, join this race every year, making it the biggest canoe race in all of Africa. It’s organized by a club called the Natal Canoe Club, right where the race begins.
A Race with Three Big Days!
This race is so long, it’s split into three parts, or stages. Each day is a new challenge! The first day is 42 kilometers long, and a big part of it means paddlers have to carry their canoes, called portaging.
That's like carrying your bike for a long walk! The second day is even longer, 46 kilometers, and includes paddling across a huge lake called Inanda Dam. The last day is a bit shorter, 36 kilometers, but still has a long paddle across a lagoon.
The fastest teams finish in less than nine hours!
What Kind of Canoes?
There are different ways to race in the Dusi! You can race in a K1, which is a canoe for one person, or a K2, for two people. There are also special canoes for fast water, and even touring canoes that are open and paddled with single-blade paddles.
Some of these canoes can have little steering wheels called rudders. Even stand-up paddleboards can join the fun in the touring class! It’s amazing how many different boats can race together.
Why is the Dusi So Special?
The Dusi Canoe Marathon is super important because it brings so many people together for an amazing adventure. It’s a test of strength, skill, and teamwork. Paddlers have to be good at paddling on rivers and lakes, and also strong enough to carry their canoes over land.
It’s a tradition that people look forward to every year, showing off incredible sportsmanship and the beauty of South Africa's rivers. It’s a true test of endurance!
