Key Facts
A Man Who Wanted Freedom!
Dred Scott was a man who was enslaved. His owners took him to places where slavery was not allowed. Dred thought this meant he should be free! So, he went to court to ask for his freedom. But the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court, said he was still a slave. This made many people very upset.
What Did the Big Court Say?
The Supreme Court made a very important decision. They said that people of African descent could not be citizens of the United States. This meant they did not have the same rights as other citizens. The court also said that slavery should be allowed in new places the country was getting. This was like saying slavery could spread everywhere!
Why Was This So Important?
This decision made the country even more divided. People who were against slavery were furious! They felt it was very unfair and wrong. People who supported slavery felt happy because they thought it was the right decision. This big argument helped lead to the American Civil War, a very sad time in history.
Did Things Change Later?
Yes! After the Civil War, the United States made new rules called amendments to the Constitution. These new rules made sure that all people born in the United States were citizens and had rights. They also made slavery illegal everywhere. So, the Dred Scott decision was eventually overturned.
