Key Facts

How It Works
Strong downward winds from a cloud that spread out horizontally on the ground.
Cloud Type
Cumulus congestus or cumulonimbus clouds.
Wind Speed
Can be strong enough to cause damage.
Related Phenomenon
Can be confused with tornadoes, but winds blow outwards, not in circles.
Aviation Concern
Dangerous wind shear for airplanes during landing and takeoff.

Whoosh! What is a Downburst?

A downburst is like a super-strong gust of wind that comes straight down from a cloud and then spreads out everywhere on the ground. It’s not like a tornado that spins around. Instead, it blows outwards in straight lines, like water from a hose turned upside down. These winds can be very powerful and happen during thunderstorms, even if there's not much rain falling.

Where Do These Wind Blasts Come From?

Downbursts start high up in big, puffy clouds called cumulonimbus clouds. Inside these clouds, air gets very cold and heavy because of rain or hail. This heavy air then rushes downwards really fast. When it hits the ground, it can’t go down anymore, so it spreads out sideways super quickly. Think of dropping a big water balloon – the water splashes out everywhere!

Why Downbursts Are Super Important (and a Little Scary!)

Downbursts can be strong enough to knock over trees and cause damage, kind of like a mini-storm. They are especially important for pilots. When a plane is landing or taking off, it’s flying very low and slow. A sudden downburst can push the plane around unexpectedly, making it hard to control. That's why pilots learn all about them to stay safe in the sky.

Different Kinds of Downbursts!

There are different types of downbursts. A 'wet downburst' happens when lots of rain falls with the wind. A 'dry downburst' happens when there's very little rain, so you might not even see it coming! There's also a 'heat burst,' which is super rare and actually makes the air warmer when it hits the ground because it doesn't have rain to cool it down.
