Don Mattingly

Imagine a super-duper baseball player named Don Mattingly! Everyone called him 'Donnie Baseball' because he was so amazing at playing baseball. He played for a very famous team called the New York Yankees for his whole career.

He was so good at hitting the ball, people nicknamed him 'The Hit Man'! He wasn't just good at hitting, he was also a great first baseman, which is a special position in baseball.

Don Mattingly grew up in a town called Evansville, Indiana. When he was a teenager, the New York Yankees saw how talented he was and picked him to play for them. It took him a few years to get really good, playing in smaller leagues first. But then, in 1983, he became the main first baseman for the Yankees! He was like a superhero on the baseball field, making amazing plays and hitting home runs.

Donnie Baseball had some incredible baseball superpowers! He was chosen for the All-Star team six times, which means he was one of the best players in the whole league! He won nine Gold Glove Awards, which is like winning a special award for being the best at catching and fielding.

He also won three Silver Slugger Awards for being a fantastic hitter. In 1985, he was even named the Most Valuable Player – the best player in the whole league that year!

Don Mattingly became the captain of the New York Yankees, which is like being the leader of the team! He played for them for 14 years. Even though he never won the World Series with the Yankees, they loved him so much that they retired his jersey number, 23.

This means no one else can wear that number for the Yankees. He also became a coach and manager for other teams, sharing his baseball wisdom with new players.
