Meet Your Fluffy Friend!

Imagine a super soft, wiggly nose, long ears that can twitch to hear a pin drop, and a little cotton-ball tail! That's a domestic rabbit! These amazing animals are like the cousins of wild rabbits, but they've been living with people for a super long time.

There are hundreds of different kinds, or breeds, all over the world, each with its own special look and personality. Some are tiny, like a fluffy slipper, while others are bigger, maybe as big as a small dog! They love to munch on yummy greens and hay.

Bunny Buddies Through Time!

Long, long ago, even before your grandparents were born, people called the Romans thought rabbits were super useful. They kept them for tasty food and warm fur to make clothes. Over many years, people chose the friendliest and gentlest rabbits to live with.

It wasn't until more recently, like in the 1980s, that people really started thinking of rabbits as pets to keep inside their homes, just like cats and dogs! Now, many rabbits are happy house pets who love to play and get cuddles.

What Makes Rabbits So Special?

Domestic rabbits are special because they are super good at being pets! They can learn to use a litter box, just like a cat, and can even come when you call their name! But, they also have a strong need to chew, so they need safe toys and places to play so they don't nibble on furniture or wires.

Sadly, sometimes people don't want their pet rabbits anymore, and they end up in shelters. It’s important to remember that these bunnies are gentle and need loving homes. They can't survive in the wild like their wild cousins.

From Farms to Your Home!

Did you know that some rabbits are still raised on farms? They are used for their soft wool, like the fluffy Angora rabbits, or for their meat and fur. Other breeds are special for different jobs, like the Rex rabbit known for its super soft fur.

Some rabbits are even used in science to help us learn new things. But the most important job for many rabbits today is being a wonderful, cuddly pet that brings joy to families everywhere!
